Kindness Takes Intention: Parenthood and Kindness Series with Keri of Living in This Season

Keri has a way with words. She's inspiring and motivating and encourages mothers like me daily. So, our conversation about kindness was no different and I'm so happy I'm able to share her words with you today.  Her kind heart and her devotion are reflected on her responses, and her insight on parenthood and kindness is both eye-opening and endearing.

Tells us the kindest thing you’ve ever experienced as a parent?
I think every time my kids hug me, say thank you.

Who/what inspires you to be kind? Explain why they/it inspires you to do so
My relationship with God inspires me to be kind. I live by Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. It is the desire of my heart to live a life that pours out the love of God to others

It’s important to be kind to others, but it’s just as important to be kind to yourself. What do you do (or plan on doing) to be kind to yourself (either as a mother, as a professional, or as a woman)?
I am so passionate about self care with mamas specifically. So often we get so consumed with motherhood that we neglect ourselves. I was recently asking a question on Instagram about what moms did for “me time”. So many jokingly asked what me time was. Underneath the humor, I know some are really struggling to find this time, but it is vital that we do! Writing is something that I am passionate about so I make time for it. Reading, having girl time, are also ways that I have time for myself. Scheduling it in is key for me. I have a friend that I meet for coffee once a month, both of us have to be intentional with this.

It’s often said that kindness is easier said than done. As a parent, what valuable advice can you give for showing kindness to others (especially to those who may not seem like they want or deserve it)?
It does take intention. It is easy to be kind to those who are kind to you. I have seen myself struggle with it and now I see my kids struggle with it. We talk a lot about doing to others as you want to be treated. Communicating about the need for kindness is key. It takes repetition, consistency and modeling by the parents

As a parent, what does kindness mean to you?
Kindness means to treat others with love and dignity

What lesson do you want your kids to learn about kindness?
I want my kids to grow up loving God and loving others. I want them to seek and to consider the view point of someone else’s life before judging them.

Interesting facts about The SHINE Blog Hop

The SHINE Blog Hop was created on May 8, 2014 by Jennifer of The Deliberate Mom.

The first ever SHINE Blog Hop had 63 posts link up!

This is what the original SHINE Blog Hop logo looked like:
The Original SHINE Blog Hop logo

The hop grew quickly and Jennifer couldn't keep up, so starting with SHINE Blog Hop #6 she selected a different guest co-host every week. Also, the current SHINE Blog Hop host, Tiffany (from A Touch of Grace) was SHINE's first-ever co-host!

The SHINE Blog Hop grew like crazy but it was hard to have a different co-host every week, so effective March 2015, Tiffany became a regular SHINE Blog Hop host!

The hop continued to grow, so in SHINE Blog Hop #68, we did a call-out for a third regular co-host. Effective SHINE Blog Hop #70, Maria (from Collecting Moments) joined the SHINE Blog Hop hosting team!

An extra-special shout-out to Caroline from In Due Time! Caroline joined us for our first ever SHINE Blog Hop and has been linking up consistently almost every week ever since! Thank you Caroline! You can check out the first post she ever linked up HERE!

First Steps to Showing Kindness to Others: Parenthood & Kindness Series with Shauna of Delightful Struggles

How good manners and leading by example can lead to kindness in children and others

I'm so happy Shauna was able to join us this week for Parenthood and Kindness. As a health counselor, she offers such a unique perspective on what parents can do to teach kids about their kindness. Her wisest suggestion: start teaching kids good manners.

Tells us the kindest thing you’ve ever experienced (professionally or personally)?
My current supervisor is amazing! I could say she is hands down the best supervisor I’ve ever had (and I’ve had some great ones!). There was one time I was having a hard time and was very stressed out at my remote location. She recognized my stress and not only did she give me awesome feedback about personal care she brought me chocolates too
me.
Who/what inspires you to be kind? Explain why they/it inspires you to do so
My fiancĂ© inspires me to be kind. He’s such an optimistic person and can see the good in people before he sees the bad. I enjoy how he is able to work with others without hesitation and he easily bounces back from rejection. It’s a gift to have someone in your life who wakes up with a smile on their face every day and it’s pretty contagious

It’s important to be kind to others, but it’s just as important to be kind to yourself. What do you do (or plan on doing) to be kind to yourself (either as a professional, or as a woman)?
We counselors always talk about self-care. I love love love a good pedicure and manicure when I could afford it. My favorite thing is crafting! I make all sorts of things and it keep me pretty relaxed as well as keeps me calm, cool, and collected.

It’s often said that kindness is easier said than done. As a mental health counselor who works mostly with families, what valuable advice can you give parents on how they can show kindness to their children or to others?
You have to mind what you say and do around children. Kids are like sponges they soak everything up. When they are young mimic things parents say and do. However, as a child gets older they take those things they learned and turn them inward. To me the best way to start is the through the use of manners. The words, please and thank you are truly magical and they can go a long way. Even waiting your turn to talk is important and it shows that you have respect for another person. Show if you show you children through modeling love and kindness and then couple this with teaching them manners and courtesy towards others they will eventually mirror this as well

What’s the most important lesson parents can give their children about kindness?
Sometimes you will be kind to others and it will not be returned, but that does not mean you should stop being kind. Parents should teach kids that what they put into the world is what they get back, so if they put out negativity they will be followed by it.
